Empowering Energy Consumers is an interactive content hub created by Economist Enterprise for energy technology platform Kraken. At its centre is a barometer surveying 10,035 consumers in ten countries on what they value, fear and understand about energy.

My role was to lead the design of the programme hub, creating an identity that sits comfortably alongside Kraken's own brand, with a touch of Economist editorial authority.

Building resilience in an age of extremes

the brief was to visualise "a power grid". I built a 3D town from scratch, with wind turbines, a creaking substation, a data centre, and homes with solar panels and EVs on the drive. Then I brought it to life in an interactive scrollytelling piece that follows the town from a grid stretched to breaking point in a winter storm to a distributed future, where homes help keep the lights on.

The town was designed and built in Cinema 4D then imported into the browser in ThreeJS. Animations were imported along with shaders for water, snow and steam to add life to the scene.

A second interactive article looks at Texas's energy future, analysing why smarter software, not quick fixes, will lower power prices. I worked closely with the editorial and video production teams, to make sure the finished product told coherent and thoughtful story, with interactive visuals used to elevate, not distract from the narrative.

The homepage has to tread a careful line, making a clear separation between Economist editorial content and branded, client supported content.
