Beyond the Surface is an Economist Impact research programme, supported by Blancpain, that looks at why some marine protected areas (MPAs) succeed where others fall short. Ten MPAs and marine conservation areas were assessed initially against a new framework covering design, management, implementation and outcomes, and the findings live in an interactive hub. A further 100 MPAs were mapped onto the interactive globe.

I was design lead on the programme, leading the UX, UI and visual design of the hub, plus motion design across video content and social assets. We collaborated with a specialist map and data designer, the amazing Craig Taylor, who built the 3D globe from real bathymetry data in Houdini, and made the area "slices" for the case studies. I textured and lit the globe and scenes, brought them into the browser, and worked on much of the front end development.

I also designed and built an infographic as part of the programme hub. This is a highly visual data storytelling piece which highlights a key ambition in the world of marine conservation: to safeguard 30% of the world’s ocean by 2030, whether as marine protected areas (MPAs) where human activity is restricted to a certain extent, or other types of conservation area.
